Industrial Design

Definition

Industrial design is a series of creative work that focuses on producing new products for consumers through mass production. An industrial design patent protects the unique appearance of a product. The materials, manufacturing process and function of products are protected with a patent. Patents and industrial designs are an asset that can be sold, licensed or used to negotiate financing and funding.

History

Industrial design is a historical practice resulting from the industrial revolution in Great Britain in the early 1800’s. Before industrialization, every product was made independently by individual craftsmen.

Processes

Most products are conceived and created through a custom process of design. Design processes vary depending on the type of manufacturing, business, brand, reputation, sales and location being used to make the product.

Evolution

Our world moves forward through innovation in industrial design. It evolves us and itself as we are aided, supported and fulfilled with products made by industrial designers throughout our history and the future.
